Over the years, hockey has seen many great players step onto the field and level up the game in new and bold ways. And while the competition continues to get tougher each year, players like Maria López García are simply in a league of their own.
The Spanish defender first made her debut in the sport when she was just 9 years old. Following in her older brother’s footsteps, Maria picked up a hockey stick and took giant strides on the field with just a few flicks and dribbles.
She later went on to play for Spain’s women’s national field hockey team, showcasing her impressive skills and unique style in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
When Maria’s not tearing up the competition with the red sticks, she can be found trotting the globe, indulging in some retail therapy or taking home the win with her club team Club de Campo.
As one of our champion #ImpactPlayers, we called up Maria to chat about her recent successes, go-to game-day tracks and biggest learning curves in her career.
Most memorable hockey moment so far?
There are too many to choose from, but I’ll mention the bronze medal in the 2018 World Cup as well as the two Olympic games I’ve competed in.

What motivates you to push your limits?
I try to do my best every day, seeking new goals and keep improving in everything I do.
When you’re not making an impact on the hockey field, what else are you doing?
I work for the Spanish Royal Hockey Federation’s marketing department and enjoy spending time with my family, friends and boyfriend.

Although donning an impressive 206 international caps, as well as a World and European Cup medal, Maria shows no signs of slowing down. The fierce defender is fired up for this year’s World Cup which is set to take place in July 2022. Will she take home the win?
